Within a computer you will find two types of RAM. Solid state means that the storage device in question has no moving parts. Since main memory is solid state, it takes less time to access main memory compared to other storage devices like magnetic and optical disks. It can access any location in main memory by specifying its address. The CPU views main memory as a collection of locations arranged in order. RAM is volatile memory, meaning that its contents are lost when the computer is switched off. More RAM means the computer can have more programs in memory at the same time. Computers come with different amounts of RAM ranging from 2 GB to 16 GB or more. The storage capacity of RAM is measured in gigabytes (GB). The main memory of a computer is made up of RAM.
